About the Sphere Benchmark

Benchmarking 3D graphics performance in a web browser became practical only once WebGL brought hardware-accelerated rendering to JavaScript in 2011, letting a browser tap the graphics card directly instead of relying on software rendering. Frame rate, measured in frames per second (FPS), has long been the standard yardstick for graphics performance — the same metric video game reviewers and hardware enthusiasts have used for decades to judge whether a graphics card can keep up with a demanding scene.

This benchmark renders a continuously rotating 3D sphere and tracks how many frames per second your browser manages to draw over the course of the test, giving a quick read on your device's combined CPU, GPU and browser rendering pipeline — useful for comparing phones, laptops or browsers, or for checking whether a machine is up to the task before diving into browser-based games or 3D work. Every result can be saved with a nickname to the global leaderboard, so you can see how your device stacks up against results submitted from around the world.

Because the test always draws the same scene for the same length of time, results from different devices are directly comparable. Run it a couple of times, close other tabs for a cleaner reading, and compare your number with the TOP 500 to see where your hardware stands.
