2048 was created in March 2014 by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli over a single weekend, itself inspired by earlier tile-merging games like 1024 and Threes!. Within days of release it became a global phenomenon, topping app store charts and spawning countless clones, variants and parodies across nearly every platform and theme imaginable.
The rules are simple: sliding the whole board in one direction moves every tile as far as it can go, and any two tiles carrying the same number merge into one tile worth their sum. The appeal comes from the tension between that simplicity and the planning it demands — clearing space for new tiles while keeping the biggest numbers corralled in a corner is far trickier than it first looks.
There's no clock and no penalty for taking your time, so it rewards thinking a move or two ahead rather than fast reflexes. This version plays the same with a swipe on a touchscreen or arrow keys on a keyboard, and every score is ranked against other players on this site's global leaderboard.
