About image formats
Image formats balance quality, file size and compatibility in different ways. JPEG is common for photographs because it keeps detailed images relatively small. PNG preserves sharp edges and transparent areas, making it useful for logos, screenshots and graphics.
WebP can offer compact files for both photographs and illustrations, but some older software may still expect JPEG or PNG. Camera formats such as HEIC save space on devices that support them, yet they can be awkward to open or share elsewhere. Choosing a familiar format often solves a compatibility problem without changing the picture itself.
Converting an image can also change its appearance or discard information. Transparent pixels need a background when saved as JPEG, and animated pictures may become still images. Before sharing an important photo, inspect the result and consider whether you need to retain its original metadata or color profile.
