About optical character recognition

Optical character recognition turns letters in photos and scanned pages into editable text. It helps make printed material searchable and easier to quote or reuse.

A PDF may already contain selectable text, or it may only contain pictures of pages. These look similar on screen, but image-only scans need recognition before their words can be searched or copied.

Recognition quality depends on print size, contrast, language and page layout. Columns, formulas, handwriting and decorative lettering often need human review. Keep the original document when accuracy matters.
